Why your energy doesn’t fit a “normal” schedule

When you understand your rhythms, everything flows better

First, let’s loosen your energy

Let’s take a moment to relax any tension.
If you’re sitting or standing, roll your shoulders back.
Feel free to close your eyes while you breathe.

Breathe into these parts of your body,
and allow your exhales to loosen any tension there:
Your shoulders, your neck, your jaw, your belly.

Inhale through your nose,
and let go with your exhale through your mouth.
Allow yourself to feel that shift.

Your energy fluctuations are not a flaw

If you’ve had days where any of these happen:

  • Your energy just vanishes…
  • You feel completely different than you did yesterday…
  • Your clarity is gone…
  • You’re irritable, tired, emotional, or foggy…
  • You’re suddenly overwhelmed by the same tasks that felt easy last week…

This is for you.

You’re not flawed.
You’re not flaky or lazy.
You’re not inconsistent or failing.

You’re cyclical. Rhythmic.

And the more you understand your natural rhythms, the more you’ll feel like you’re finally living with your energy changes — not against them.

The antidote to shame and confusion (and a hidden superpower)

We live in a world that praises consistency and productivity…
Even when it burns us out.

But your energy isn’t built for sameness.
It’s built for seasons. For phases. For flow.

Here at Hearth & Sage, we honor five core rhythms that help you understand your energy levels and types, your moods and desires, and your body and mind’s needs.

The five core rhythms we can become aware of and work with are:

  • Daily energy
  • Menstrual cycle energy
  • Lunar cycles: moon phases and moon sign shifts
  • Sun / astrological sign shifts
  • Seasonal energy

Your energy, your emotions, your focus — they’re not meant to be the same every day. And they never will be. Even if you don’t have a menstrual cycle, the other 4 rhythms affect you, whether you realize it or not.

They’re nothing to be ashamed of or to hide or suppress. And once you understand them and work with them, the confusion of your ever-changing energy disappears.

These fluctuations are not a “bug”. They’re a “feature”.

A hidden superpower

These energy changes we all have? They follow patterns you can tap into.

When you understand these patterns, you can actually predict your energy and plan for them. And when you do that, you actually become more productive and creative, get better rest, and become happier.

This is where our rhythms become a superpower. Not a flaw.

When you begin to pay attention to these quiet cycles, something profound happens:

You stop making yourself wrong.
You give yourself permission to need different things on different days.
You remember that life isn’t linear.

It’s rhythmic. And so are you.

Let’s lightly explore each rhythm now…

1. Daily Energy Patterns

Not every day is the same.
And not every part of the day feels the same either.

Some people wake up full of focus. Others don’t hit their groove until late afternoon.
Some have energy in bursts, then need long rest periods.

These patterns are already recognized in our culture: Early bird, night owl, etc. And you might already know yours. But do you work with them? Or do you fight against them?

Start noticing your daily peak and valley times.

  • When do you feel focused?
  • When do you feel foggy?
  • When is your energy spent?
  • When do you push through, instead of pivoting?

You don’t need to force productivity into the wrong part of your day.
Instead, you can learn to ride the wave: Get things done when your energy is naturally there, and rest when it’s not.

2. Menstrual Cycle Phases

Even if your cycle is irregular or shifting, this rhythm still lives in you. It’s a biological rhythm, but it’s also energetic and emotional.

Throughout each cycle, you move through four inner seasons, each with their own superpowers.

  • Ovulation = Inner Summer
    Magnetic. Social. Outward. Expressive.
    You want connection, collaboration, pleasure.
  • Luteal = Inner Autumn
Focused. Responsible. Discerning. Protective. A little edgy.
You crave nesting, solitude, order, boundaries, quiet.
  • Menstruation = Inner Winter
    Tired. Reflective. Slow. Private. Quiet.
You need stillness, warmth, rest, release.
  • Follicular = Inner Spring
    Inspired. Rebuilding. Open. Fresh starts.
You feel lightness and possibility again.

When you notice where you are in this inner rhythm, you stop blaming yourself for needing a nap — or space — or a microphone.

Once you understand this cycle, you stop judging yourself for changing.
You begin to plan, relate, and rest more in sync with yourself.

3. The Moon: Phases and Signs

The moon’s 4 phases mirror the 4 phases of our menstrual cycle — and with the literal seasons. This isn’t a coincidence. Women are lunar beings — yin — not solar (yang).

Each phase brings a subtle shift in how you feel, what you want, and what you’re able to give.

  • New Moon = rest, reset, inward, plant intentions
    Aligns with winter and menstruation
  • First Quarter = action, resistance, momentum, motivation
Aligns with spring and the follicular phase
  • Full Moon = peak energy, clarity, emotion, expression
    Aligns with summer and ovulation
  • Last Quarter = reflection, release, recalibration
Aligns with fall and the luteal phase

The sign the moon is in (changing every ~2.5 days) adds another layer to the cosmic energy that affects you. A Virgo moon might inspire cleaning or organizing. A Cancer moon might stir tenderness or coziness.

These micro-shifts explain why one luteal phase or full moon can feel so different from the next.

4. The Sun in the Signs

Each zodiac season brings a new energetic flavor to the month — like shifting lenses on how you experience life.

  • Sagittarius Season (late November to late December) might inspire expansion, exploration, teaching
  • Capricorn Season (late December to late January) may call you inward for structure, boundaries, head down to work, reflection
(Christmas, end of year, and New Year’s all fall in this sign)
  • Pisces Season invites softness, dreaminess, surrender, stillness, emotions
  • Aries Season (start of spring) creates the spark of new ideas, starting new things, planting seeds

These aren’t rules — just rhythms to tune into.
You may already feel them. Now you’ll know what you’re sensing.

5. The Seasons of the Year

Your nervous system and energy levels shift when the sun rises later… when the air cools… when the light changes.

Even in modern life, you are still a seasonal creature. You aren’t meant to feel the same all year.

  • Autumn calls us inward and asks us to release what’s no longer working for us
  • Winter asks us to rest, get cozy, stay warm and safe inside
  • Spring inspires new beginnings, planting seeds, coming back to life
  • Summer expands us outward, shining light for all to see

There is wisdom in your body’s desire to slow in winter — and bloom in spring. We honor that here.

A rhythm ritual you can try today

Take out your calendar — or just look at today’s date. Ask yourself:

  • Where am I in my menstrual cycle?
  • What phase is the moon in today?
  • What zodiac season are we in?
  • What part of the day is it?
  • What’s happening in the season around me?
  • And how am I feeling?

Just start to notice. The more you pay attention to these natural rhythms, and how you feel in each phase, the more you can start to work with them.

That’s a rhythm-based life. One breath at a time.Maybe you’re doing everything “right”.
