Why Practicing Magic and Living Magically are NOT the Same
And why it definitely matters
Before we begin, letβs breathe for a moment.
Breathe in slowly, through your nose.
Exhale through your mouth.
In through your nose,
and out through your mouth.
One more time: in, and out.
Now, let’s dive in.
When you were first introduced to the concept of magic, it was probably showy. Maybe it was a magician doing tricks, or spells being cast in a movie or book. Leaving the magic of illusionary tricks by magicians aside… However you were first introduced, your first impression of magic was most likely elaborate. Maybe it was beautiful, maybe it was messy. But it almost definitely wasn’t clean and simple.
You’ve probably learned along the way certain types of magic require specific moon phases. The proper candles, dressed and carved. The altar set just so. The herbs chosen carefully, the direction of the stir, the timing of the intention. The ritual you need to be home for, with an hour set aside, the energy right, the conditions aligned.
I want to be clear now: Whether you call it ritual or spells or practicing witchcraft, that form of magic is real. Ritual and symbolism hold meaning. And it is a beautiful, intentional way to focus your energy and intention. There is nothing wrong with that.
That being said… it is not the only way.
And this kind of magic does not help you in the middle of an emergency, or in a moment of panic, or when you’re not at home, by your altar, with all the right ingredients, tools, quiet, energy, and time you need to complete a perfect β or even a messy β ritual.
Magic as an Event vs. Magic as a Way of Life
For far too long, many of us have treated magic the way our grandmothers used to treat “the good china”: Saved for special occasions. Brought out carefully. Packed away again when the moment passed.
And what that creates is a life with moments of magic. If you feel up to it on the full moon. If the timing is right. If you have the ingredients and the energy and the time and the space….
It does not create a magical life.
And there is a difference. A profound one.
Practicing magic β the ritual, the spell, the ceremony β treats magic as something you do. A special act, requiring special conditions, that you step into and step back out of.
Magical living makes magic something you are. A lens through which you see everything. A frequency you hold. A way of moving through an ordinary Tuesday β that turns it into something quietly extraordinary.
One gives you occasional moments of magic.
The other gives you a magical life.
The Difference: In Real Life Examples
The difference isn’t abstract β it’s visible in the movement of an ordinary day.
Protection Magic
Practicing magic: A full ritual. Home, altar set up, candles, specific herbs, time carved out, conditions as ideal as possible.
Living magically: The instant a worry flickers across your mind β in the parking lot, in the school pickup line, lying in bed at three in the morning β you cast. One breath. One thought. Done. Protection doesn’t wait for you to get home. (You can learn my proven, instant practice here.)
Working with Money
Practicing magic: Money spells on the right moon phase. Specific timing, specific ingredients, specific intention set during the window. Waiting, and hoping, it will work.
Living magically: Finding money where it logically shouldn’t be β because you’ve made abundance your baseline expectation, not something you petition for on the new moon. Money shows up in both expected and unexpected ways, from unexpected sources, as a matter of course.
Crystals
Practicing magic: Working with crystals on the new or full moon. Charging them during those windows. Treating them as sacred objects to be brought out with ceremony.
Living magically: Wearing crystal bracelets β on your skin β every day. Chosen intentionally each morning for the energy you want to carry. Cleansed and recharged nightly as part of your regular rhythm, not waiting for the full moon. An everyday part of your life.
Color Magic
Practicing magic: Choosing candle colors for spell work. Using color for ritual purposes.
Living magically: Your walls are painted with intentional colors. Your decor carries energy. Every morning you choose what to wear with awareness of what that color does energetically. Feng shui isn’t a project β it’s how your home is arranged, full stop.
Space Clearing
Practicing magic: Cleansing on the equinoxes, the full moon, the prescribed windows.
Living magically: Aura sprays, spritzed on yourself when you need them. Space cleared when it needs clearing β and as part of your regular cleaning rhythm, not waiting for permission from the calendar.
Grounding
Practicing magic: Barefoot on the earth on full moons, during ceremonies, at intentional moments.
Living magically: Barefoot on the grass daily. Because it feels good. Because it works. Because you don’t need any reason other than that.
Candles
Practicing magic: Special candles. Altar. Dressed, carved, chosen with precision for specific spells.
Living magically: Lighting a candle simply because it changes the vibe of your space β and so also of you. Because candlelight is its own kind of magic. Because you decide, in that moment, that it is β and that is enough. A single thought of intention as you strike the match. No altar required.
Simmer Pots
Practicing magic: Ingredients chosen precisely, stirred in specific directions, set with exacting intention for a particular outcome.
Living magically: Simmering on your stove any day, every day if you want β because it makes your home smell like something light and beautiful, because it shifts the energy in a room, because it makes you calm and happy. The intention can be specific. Or it can simply be I want my home to feel like this. Both are magic.
Your Morning Coffee
Practicing magic: A full coffee potion β specific ingredients, special stirring, a ritual with steps, incantations, sigils, and elements.
Living magically: Choosing your favorite mug. The one that makes you feel something. Deciding, as you wrap your hands around it, that this moment is sacred β because you say it is. Your coffee is already magic. You just have to let it be.
Manifesting
Practicing magic: Getting every element right. The right number of repetitions, the right words, the right ritual. Then wondering and waiting.
Living magically: Meditating into the version of yourself who already has what you want. Becoming her. Deciding with such settled, unhurried certainty that it will happen β that the universe has no choice but to agree. Not waiting for results. Knowing.
The Thing About the Good China
Here is what I want you to understand.
The rituals, the ceremonies, the carefully timed spells β they have power. But treating magic like the good china β saved for special occasions, only brought out when conditions are perfect (or desperate) β creates a certain kind of life. One where magic visits you occasionally, if everything was properly aligned.
But when you let magic become part of your everyday β when you stop waiting for the full moon to hold your crystals and just do it tonight, when you stop saving your protection practice for the altar and start using it as you lie down for bed β something shifts.
Magic stops being something you practice.
Magic becomes “the norm”. It becomes simply how things are.
You and your family always safe and protected. Always healthy. Money appearing “out of nowhere”. Parking spots always waiting. The kitchen clean when you wake up. The thing you need arrives before you even finish asking for it.
Not because you performed the right ritual. Because you stopped treating magic as saved for a special occasion and started treating magic as your natural state.
That is the difference between a life with moments of magic and of living a magical life.
Where to Begin
You don’t need to overhaul anything. You don’t need to be home, or have the right tools, or wait for the moon.
Start with one thing. Choose your mug with intention tomorrow morning. Light a candle tonight for no reason other than the vibe. Put your feet on the grass today. Dress in a color chosen on purpose.
Let it be that simple.
Because the secret β the one that thirty years of living this way has taught me β is that magic was never complicated. We just made it that way.
The magic was always available. Always immediate. Always waiting for you to realize, it was right there.
You just have to decide it is, and live accordingly.
